What is SOCSO / PERKESO?

PERKESO, known in English as SOCSO, administers Malaysia’s social security schemes. Employers of foreign workers and foreign domestic helpers must register and contribute for the Employment Injury Scheme.

Who does it apply to?

Every employer of a foreign worker or domestic helper, including private households.

Key facts

  • The contribution is paid by the employer. It is not deducted from the worker’s wages.
  • Registration and monthly payment are done through the ASSIST portal.
  • The Employment Injury Scheme covers injury arising in the course of employment, including commuting accidents.
  • Contribution records are asked for at permit renewal, so gaps surface a year later.
  • The obligation is federal, and applies in Sarawak as well as Peninsular Malaysia.
