Long Term Social Visit Pass, Malaysia
For the family a Dependent Pass will not stretch to: parents, older children, and a few relationships in between.
The short answer
A Long Term Social Visit Pass covers family members of an Employment Pass holder who fall outside the Dependent Pass: most commonly parents, children over 18, and common-law partners where recognised. It permits residence, not work. In some circumstances a work endorsement can be added, but it must be applied for and granted; it is not implied by the pass.
Who is it for?
- Parents of the Employment Pass holder.
- Children aged 18 and over.
- Stepchildren and, in some cases, other dependent relatives.
It is also the pass most often used by a non-Sarawakian spouse of a Sarawakian who does not qualify for the Spouse Programme in Sarawak. That is a Sarawak process with its own requirements and its own security bond.
Can the holder work?
Only with a work endorsement, applied for separately and granted at the immigration department’s discretion. Where an endorsement is granted, it is normally tied to a named employer, so changing jobs means re-applying.
Is it different in Sarawak?
Yes. Sarawak issues its own LTSVP through the Visa, Pass and Permit division of the Sarawak Immigration Department. Duration varies by nationality, a security bond is payable, and processing typically runs longer than the federal equivalent.
