Document checklist for hiring a domestic helper in Kuala Lumpur
For Malaysian citizens and permanent residents. Answer a few questions about your household and get the list for your application, without the documents that don’t apply to you.
The short answer
Every household hiring a helper in Kuala Lumpur gives the same three things: photographs, your NRIC and a utility bill. What else you need depends on why you need her, your marital status and where you earn your income. Immigration also sets a minimum household income per helper: RM5,000 a month for a Filipino helper and RM7,000 for an Indonesian one. Answer the questions below and the list builds itself.
Your document list
- Helpers in this application
- Minimum household income
Start these first. They take days, not minutes:
Documents about you
-
Passport-size photographs of you, on a blue or white background
-
Your NRIC, front and back
-
Latest utility bill for the address where she will live and work
An Astro or internet bill is accepted. It must show the address she’ll be employed at.
Documents showing why you need her
Immigration approves a helper for a reason, and these prove the reason.
-
Birth certificate of one child under 15
Because you ticked childcare. One child is enough, even if you have more.
-
Doctor’s letter confirming the pregnancy, yours or your spouse’s, from a government or specialist hospital
Because you’re expecting your first child, and there’s no birth certificate to give yet.
-
Doctor’s letter for elderly care, from a government hospital, a government clinic or a specialist hospital
The doctor signs off on the elderly person’s medical condition. The original goes in, so ask for two if you want to keep one.
-
Passport-size photograph of the elderly person
Asked for on Indonesian applications.
-
Your birth certificate and your parent’s NRIC, showing the relationship
The elderly person is your parent, so your birth certificate has to name them.
-
Your spouse’s birth certificate and your parent-in-law’s NRIC, showing the relationship
The elderly person is your spouse’s parent, so it’s your spouse’s birth certificate that has to name them.
-
NRIC of the person she’ll care for
If they aren’t Malaysian, their passport and Malaysian visa instead.
-
Medical letter from a doctor confirming their condition
-
Your marriage certificate, as proof of relation
-
Your child’s birth certificate, as proof of relation
-
Birth certificates proving you’re siblings: yours and theirs
-
Photographs of your home, as proof of a large residence
- The front of the house, with the house number visible
- Inside the house
- The street name sign
Because you ticked housekeeping, which is approved on the size of the home.
-
Photographs of your home, as proof of a large residence
- Your front door, with the unit number visible
- Inside the unit
- The street name sign
- The guardhouse
- The building
Because you ticked housekeeping, which is approved on the size of the home. A condominium needs the guardhouse and the building as well.
-
Work permit and passport of every domestic helper you already employ
-
PERKESO contribution statements for every helper you already employ
Documents about your marital status
-
Passport-size photographs of your spouse, on a blue or white background
-
Your spouse’s NRIC, front and back
-
Your spouse’s passport and Malaysian visa or pass
In place of an NRIC, because your spouse isn’t Malaysian.
-
Marriage certificate
-
Divorce certificate
-
Court order showing custody of your children
Because you’re divorced and hiring for childcare, Immigration needs to see that you have custody.
-
Death certificate of your spouse
Documents proving your income
Give us one of these two sets, whichever is easier. You don’t need both.

Your spouse earns too, so include the same set for them. Their income counts towards the household figure.
